REACTION OF 3-BENZYLIDENEPHTHALIDE WITH DIAMINES AND PARA-AMINOPHENYLCARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF THE PRODUCTS

Bis-(2-methylene-3-benzalphthalimidine) II, desoxybenzoin-o-(4'aminophenyl) carboxamide III and 2-(substitutedphenyl )-3-benzalphthalimidines of type IV and V were obtained via interaction of corresponding diamines with 3-benzylidenephthalide I. Condensation of C6H4 (NH2)2-1,2 with I gave fused benzimidazoisoindol derivative VII as anomalous product. Benzalphthalimidines with £-carboxylate of type VIIIa-c are also prepared. Their IR, PMR and Mass spectra were also studied, III and VIIIb were found to exhibit activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, yeast and filamentous fungi. read more

SYNTHESIS OF 2,4-DIHYDROXY-1,5-DIPHENYL-PENTANE-1,5-DIONE AND ITS REACTIONS WITH UREAS

2,4-Dihydroxy-l, 5-diphenyl pentane-l, 5-dione (3b) has been synthesised by the hydrolysis of 2,4-dibromo-l, 5-diphenyl pentane-l, 5-dione in 75% aqueous acetone containing silver oxide acting as catalyst. During hydrolysis compound (5) is obtained alongwith (3b). The reaction mechanism pertaining to formation of compound (3b) is also proposed. The structural elucidation of compounds (3b,5) has been done by spectroscopic techniques. Unfortunately our target compound (3b) does not react with urea and its alkyl derivatives. It is also possible that steric factors playa part in making (3b) unreactive. read more

SYNTHESIS OF NITROGENOUS COMPOUNDS FROM DELTA-UNSATURATED 1,3-DICARBONYL ESTERS .1. SUBSTITUTED PYRAZOLES, ISOXAZOLES AND OXYQUINOXALINES

Condensation of 4-substituted-but-3-en-2-ones (1) with ethyl oxalate gave ethyl 6-aryl-2,4-dioxo-62-hexenoates (2) and were interconverted to the methyl esters by alcoholysis. Compounds (2) were converted by hydrazine or arylhydrazine into the corresponding ethyl 1-H/aryl-5-substituted-pyrazole3-carboxylates (3), which were hydrolysed to the acids (4). With hydroxylami ne, the ethyl hexenoates (2) afforded 3 ,5-di subs tituted-i soxazo 1 es (5), whereas, with o-phenylenediamine they gave oxyquinoxaline derivatives (6).The 1,3-di keto-es ters (2) on reacti on with acyl hydrazi nes gave the acylhydrazones (7) which were cyclized to the corresponding N-acylpyrazoles (8). Reaction of (1) with arylhydrazines afforded the corresponding hydrazones (9) which on boiling with ethanol containing two drops of HCl underwent cycl ization to the pyrazol ines (10). Oxidation of (10) with an excess of bromine-water produced the brominated pyrazole derivatives (11). Furthermore, the condensa t i on of the ex,8 -unsa tura ted ketones (1) with acyl hydrazi nes furnished the corresponding hydrazones (12).read more

CARBONIZATION OF WALNUT SHELLS AND THE DETERMINATION OF SURFACE-ACIDITY OF CHARCOAL BY SELECTIVE NEUTRALIZATION TECHNIQUE

Charcoal obtained from walnut shells were studied for determining the acidic surface complexes by selective neutralization technique using bases of different strengths. Effect of time, benzene extraction and demineralization on the uptakes of various bases by charcoal were investigated and groups like carboxyl, lactone, phenolic, hydroxyl and keto-enol were thought to be present on the surface of charcoal. Uptakes of stronger bases sodium ethoxide and potassium isopropoxide were unexpectedly low, which were thought to be due to the bulky size of ethoxide and isopropoxide, which get access into the mi cropores with di ffi culty as compared to the smalls i zed hydroxide.read more

DETERMINATION OF CHROMIUM IN COLLECTED LEATHER SAMPLES AND TANNERIES WASTE BY SPECTROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES

Chromium was extracted from collected leather samples by two different methods and in the extracted solution chromi um was determined by U.V./Vis and atomic absorption methods. The chromium values in the extracted solution of both methods and using a rival SLC method were compared.Speciation studies were also carried out in this paper and were applied to the collected water samples. For spectrophotometric determination of Cr(III), benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) was chosen as chelating agent, while for Cr(VI), diphenylcarbazide was chosen. Limits of detection of the two methods was also investigated and was found to be 50 ppb for Cr(III) and 15 ppb forCr(VI). The interferences effect of Cr(vl) , CU ,Zn ,Mo(VI) and V(V)were also investigated on Cr(Ill) determination using BHA as a chelating agent.read more

STUDIES ON THE CONDENSATION OF 1,3-DIARYL-PROPEN-1-ONE WITH ETHYL CYANOACETATE

Michael condensation of l[p-bromophenyl]-3-[p-chlorophenyl]-propen- I-one [I] with ethyl cyanoacetate in the presence of ammonium acetate leads to the formation of (II) 6-[p-bromophenyl]-2-hydroxy-4-[p-chlorophenyl] nicotinonitrile, and nicotinamide (III) as a major product. The reaction of (II) with phosphorous oxychloride, Grignard reagents and ethyl bromoacetate gives, 2-chloro-(IV), 3-acyl-(X) and 2-alkoxy (VII) pyridine derivatives. Reactions of (IV) with amines, hydrazine hydrate, sodamide and alkoxides are also investigated. (X) reacted with hydrazine hydrate and hydroxylamine hydrochloride to give substituted IH-pyrazolopyridine (XI) and isoxazolopyridine (XI I). Also, reaction of (VI) with hydrazine hydrate and (I) with urea, thiourea, hydrazine hydrate, phenylhydrazine and oxidation with hydrogen peroxide are described.read more
